Medicare: Do You Know All You Should?

Other Services Covered Under Medicare

Since part of the design of the Medicare system is to prevent or reduce medical treatment, several other physician services are covered under the statutes. Several examples include prosthetic devices, social worker services, psychologist services, certain specified [not all] vaccines, pap smears, and breast cancer tests.

However, you should be aware that many services are not covered. A few examples include cosmetic surgery, foot care, eye examinations, hearing aids, prescription drugs, and routine physicals. To find out if a particular procedure is covered, you might consult with the Medicare office prior to scheduling the treatment or tests.

There are a number of excellent "supplemental" health plans which, for a small monthly charge, provide coverage for certain of these services, or in some cases, a reduced rate for certain services. For example, certain of these plans will give you a special or fixed rate for prescriptions, or designate a percentage off of the actual price of these prescriptions as the rate which you pay. As another example, under certain vision plans, a number of routine services, such as eye exams, may be included free of charge or at a specific low rate. Your enrollment in this type of plan is an excellent way to supplement the coverage of Medicare plans, and to make sure that you are not a victim of sky-rocketing costs. These plans can result in huge savings each year of enrollment.
