Medicaid - What If This System Is Necessary
Dealing With Providers Under MedicaidMany of the rules in this area are similar to the rules governing providers under Medicare. Again, state law seeks to impose certain restrictions on providers which may be more restricting than those imposed by federal regulations. You should consult your state law for more information on providers and limitations.
Generally, there is no choice under Medicaid to use your own doctor or hospital or other provider. Only those professionals or entities approved by Medicaid are permitted to be used by Medicaid recipients. Once you have selected several doctors or entities approved by Medicaid, you do have the right to choose among those approved.
Recently many states have instituted "managed care programs," and you will be required to utilize these services if your state law so mandates.
Also, while no co-payment or deductible is contemplated by Medicaid, certain states have set certain co-payments or deductibles in some instances. The overriding concern of Medicaid is the "minimal" contribution from patients required by the federal Medicaid law.
Most importantly, you cannot be denied services if you cannot pay. The providers are required to provide the services and then bill either Medicaid or you.
